If a user takes three times the average duration to answer a simple question about their primary challenge, that hesitation is itself a data point screaming for attention; it suggests cognitive load or internal conflict about the correct answer within the provided framework. I am particularly interested in tracking the frequency of modal shifts within a single, long-form response—a user starting strongly positive, abruptly changing terminology, and ending negatively. This isn't just noise; it often flags a boundary condition where the product works well for one specific use case but completely breaks down under slight environmental pressure. We need algorithms that penalize superficial agreement and reward articulated friction, even if the final numerical rating is middling.
Furthermore, the structure of the preceding questions dramatically influences the subsequent responses, a known biasing effect we often ignore in the rush to collect data points. If we ask three questions about speed before asking about reliability, the respondent enters the reliability question already primed to interpret it primarily through a temporal lens, even if their actual concern is data integrity. I’ve been experimenting with injecting seemingly unrelated, almost tangential "control" questions—say, about their typical working environment or the time of day they use the service—midway through a functional assessment. Then, we look for correlation between the answers to these control variables and the variance in functional ratings.
