Poor integration leads to data silos, forcing HR or managers to copy and paste data, which introduces errors and immediately degrades trust in the system's output. We should also be wary of platforms that heavily favor quantitative metrics without providing robust qualitative fields; performance is rarely just a number, and forcing complex human interactions into simplistic numerical scales often misses the entire point of development.
When evaluating potential candidates, I always insist on seeing the administrative backend for reporting and analytics, not just the polished dashboards shown to end-users. The true measure of a system's utility lies in its ability to surface actionable patterns—for example, identifying which departments consistently struggle with goal alignment or which managers avoid giving developmental feedback entirely. If the reporting function requires custom SQL queries just to pull basic attrition correlation data, that’s a massive red flag signaling weak native analytical power. I’m also very sensitive to how the system handles historical data migration and version control; if we switch platforms every four years, we need assurance that our performance narratives from previous cycles remain accessible and understandable within the new structure. Finally, let's talk about vendor lock-in; what is the actual, documented process for exporting all associated performance data—feedback logs, goals, ratings—in a universally usable, non-proprietary format should we decide to move on? That exit strategy documentation is often buried deep in the service agreement, and ignoring it now is planning for future friction.
